Here Comes The Sun

It needs to be scientifically researched why, whenever the sun is out and the flowers are blooming, I feel like nothing could possibly go wrong in my life. It doesn't actually stop things from going wrong, but somehow it just doesn’t matter.

I got food poisoning - the sun is shining, so who cares.
I was friend-zoned, but the flowers look really pretty, so it doesn’t matter.
I’m also going through the process of getting diagnosed with endometriosis; however, I saw my first chunky bumblebee, so everything is good.

It’s like the little delirious blip you get before you either laugh or burst out in tears…that’s what Spring feels like to me.

If you read my last journal entry you would know that I set myself a goal this month: to publish my new portfolio and stop being such a nervous perfectionist.

After a long talking to from a friend to stop second guessing myself and just get it out there, I am happy to say that I did manage to do it! You can view it on the website now under the portfolio tab. Yay!

Am I 100% happy with it? No. Though I don’t think I know any artist that is 100% happy with their portfolio, you always see imperfections and things you need to add or change. It’s like when you renovate your house, you do one room and then the rest look horrible. So you redo them, and then the first one looks rubbish again, it’s an endless cycle of pure madness.

That being said, I am a lot happier with this portfolio compared to my old one. The old one looked like a hobby, and this one looks like someone who wants a career in illustration. I had crammed too much into my first one without thinking about the story or themes, and it definitely showed.

A top tip from me to anyone who’s updating or starting their own portfolio is not to be afraid of white space. The space is your friend, it lets your pictures breathe and shine. Without it, they will all fight with each other and get lost, so add the white space!

Now, if you’re like me and get easily distracted then setting a goal for the next month is a MUST. I am a big fan of mindless drawing, drawing what you feel in the moment. However, if you want to progress and to succeed there needs to be some order to the madness.

So, before the next blog post, I will make sure to send out my portfolio to agencies and magazines, let's say 5 of each, and even if I get rejections, it’s still progression.

Rejection = progression.

Damn, I can be so wise sometimes.

For all you arty girlies, it’s time to SET A GOAL, and when I talk to you again next month, I want you to have completed it. No excuses. Let’s push and motivate each other.

If you’re stuck on what to create next month or what goal to set, then try making your own spring wallpaper. I loved creating the four pieces above, and it’s nice to have a piece of your work on your phone that pops up every time you pick it up. Who knows, maybe someone will see it and ask about it, and then you have a new follower (or even a job opportunity). The little things count, as you never know who you’ll be around.

That’s it from me, more life updates and art stories to come next month, but in the meantime, have fun creating!

See you next month,

Lora x
